If you are using Home edition of Windows, follow the other method or enable Group Policy Editor first to follow the same steps below.
- First, press the button Win + Rthen type gpedit.msc and press Enter to open the Group Policy Editor.
- In the Group Policy Editor window, browse the following path below this.
Computer Configuration – Administrative Templates – Windows Components – BitLocker Drive Encryption – Removable Data Drives
- In the Removable Data Drives folder, you can see a policy named Configure use of hardware-based encryption for removable data drives. You need to double click on this policy.
- In the policy edit window, select the Disabled option, then click Apply and OK to save your settings.
After doing that, from now onwards, hardware-based encryption will be disabled for removable data drives when using BitLocker.
To enable the setting, you must select the Enabled option in the policy edit window. Then, check the option Use BitLocker software-based encryption when hardware encryption is not available in the Options section.
2. Disable Hardware-based encryption on BitLocker Removable drives Using Registry Editor
- Press the button Win + Rthen type regedit and press Enter to open Registry Editor.
- In the Registry Editor window, browse the following path below this.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft
- At location, right click on Microsoftthen select New – Key and name it with FVE.
- Furthermore, right click on FVE or empty space in the right pane, then select New – DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it with RDVHardwareEncryption.
- By default, the DWORD has Value data 0 (zero) and you have to save it. If not, then double click at him, then change value data Becomes 0 (zero) and click OK.
- Next, you need to create two more DWORD namely RDVAllowSoftwareEncryptionFailover and RDVRestrictHardwareEncryptionAlgorithms.
- As usual, make sure the Value data of each DWORD is 0 (nol).
- Finally, close Registry Editor and restart your computer.
