If you want to allow or deny Deny write access to removable drives not protected by BitLocker, then here’s how to do it. This policy is useful for locking or unlocking removable media (such as external hard drives or USB drives) that are protected by BitLocker. It is possible to enable or disable this setting with the help of the Local Group Policy Editor and Registry Editor on your Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.

Use one of the following methods that you find easiest to follow. Please note that BitLocker is not available in Home editions of Windows and requires a Trusted Platform Module (TPM). This method can also be followed by users who have running BitLocker without TPM.

1. Using the Local Group Policy Editor Method

To allow or deny Deny write access to removable drives not protected by BitLocker using the Local Group Policy Editor, then follow the steps below.

  • Press the button Win + Rthen type gpedit.msc and press Enter to open Group Policy Editor.
  • In the Local Group Policy Editor window, browse the following path below this.

Computer Configuration – Administrative Templates – Windows Components – BitLocker Drive Encryption – Removable Data Drives

  • At the location, you can find and double click policy named Deny write access to removable drives not protected by BitLocker to make changes.
  • In the policy edit window, select an option Enabled for allow or options Disabled for refuse the policy in question.
  • Finally, click Apply and OK to save changes.

2. Using the Registry Editor Method

To allow or deny Deny write access to removable drives not protected by BitLocker using the Registry, follow the steps below.

  • Press the button Win + Rthen type regedit and press Enter to open Registry Editor.
  • In the Registry Editor window, browse the following path below this.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft

  • At this location, you need to create a new sub-key. Therefore, right click on Microsoftthen select New – Key and name it with FVE.
  • After that, right click on FVE or empty space in the right pane, then select New – DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it with RDVDenyCrossOrg.
  • By default, the Value data of the RDVDenyCrossOrg DWORD is set to 0 (zero). If you want refuse Deny write access, then you must save the Value data. However, if you want allow Deny write access, then you need to double click on DWORD RDVDenyCrossOrg.
  • In the DWORD edit window, set Value data Becomes 1 and click OK to save your settings.
  • After that, close the Registry Editor window and restart your computer to apply the changes.

If you want to set it to factory default, then you have to delete this RDVDenyCrossOrg DWORD. Therefore, right click on RDVDenyCrossOrgthen select an option Delete and click Yes in the confirmation window.
